The ACR DSI has had a busy quarter launching a new program, making big updates to the AI Central directory, and welcoming two new colleagues to our leadership team.
The DSI announced the launch of the first national artificial intelligence quality assurance program for radiology facilities who can now become an ACR Recognized Center for Healthcare-AI (ARCH-AI). Launched at the at the 2024 SIIM-ACR Data Science Summit, ARCH-AI recognition of a facility signals imaging AI is being used safely and effectively. The consensus-based program is designed to recognize adherence to best practices for use of AI in imaging interpretation and requires attestation by the facility that they meet program criteria that span infrastructure, processes, and governance in AI implementation in real-world practice. Program criteria will continue to evolve in concert with best practices.
Also announced at the Data Science Summit was the new AI-Platforms section on AI Central.org – an entirely new area of the designated ACR artificial intelligence (AI) marketplace navigation tool that users can learn more about with a few simple clicks through the directory. With this update, we made it easier to understand that products are delivered to the market by specific platform companies that help manage the orchestration of AI for an organization. AI Central is a comprehensive resource where anyone interested in the AI market can find critical and easily digestible information in one place.
DSI also welcomed two new experienced and well-established colleagues to our leadership team: Woojin Kim, MD, and Bernardo Bizzo, MD, PhD. Dr. Kim, a musculoskeletal radiologist at Palo Alto VA Medical Center and currently the Chief Medical Information Officer at RAD AI, joins us as the new ACR DSI Chief Medical Officer, following the transition of Bibb Allen Jr., MD, FACR, to a Senior Advisor role for the DSI. Dr. Allen, a diagnostic radiologist at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, stepped down as the inaugural DSI CMO in July. ACR and the radiology community owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Allen for his wide-ranging contributions to the DSI include establishing the mission and vision of the DSI, voicing positions on regulatory, legal, ethical, and payment issues, programming for the annual SIIM-ACR Data Science Summits, sharing his extensive knowledge on imaging AI in numerous peer-reviewed publications and on DSI’s AI Assistant Blog. Dr. Allen will continue in an advisory role, sharing his vast expertise and assisting in the transition. Dr. Bizzo joins us as the ACR DSI Associate Chief Science Officer in collaboration with our current Chief Science Officer, Keith J. Dreyer, DO, PhD, FACR. Dr. Bizzo is a diagnostic radiologist and a Senior Director at the Mass General Brigham (MGB) AI business, focused on clinical AI activities and its Digital Clinical Research Organization. The DSI is excited to bring their breadth of experience to the ACR DSI team.
On the occasion of these appointments, Dr. Christoph Wald, Chair of the ACR Informatics Commission and Vice Chair of the ACR Board of Chancellors commented: “The addition of both, Drs. Kim and Bizzo complements the current DSI leadership team while adding important competencies in the areas of generative AI, AI lifecycle testing and validation, and knowledge of the AI marketplace. Their addition positions the DSI well to lead in the buildout of the ACR Assess-AI registry for post-market surveillance and further promotes the safe and effective use of imaging AI.”
