ACR Data Science Institute updates AI Central to improve AI transparency and patient care

Reston, Va (Nov. 20, 2023) – New American College of Radiology (ACR) Data Science Institute® (DSI) AI Central (AICentral.org) programs empower practices to access more-transparent AI product information and make better AI purchases. AI Central connects radiologists and other users with manufacturers providing such transparency — enabling facilities to select algorithms that can improve care for their patients.

"The Transparent-AI program asks manufacturers to disclose detailed product information, including training data demographics and machine specifications aimed at increasing transparency in imaging AI algorithms," said Keith Dreyer, DO, PhD, FACR, ACR DSI chief science officer. "This initiative is ongoing and seeks to assist radiology practices in selecting products tailored to their specific requirements and local populations."

Manufacturers who participate in this program will receive the Transparent-AI badge on their product listing. Several manufacturers have already committed to this process (with others in the process) — including:

  • GE HealthCare
  • Siemens Healthineers
  • Whiterabbit.ai
  • Therapixel
  • Aidoc
  • AIRS Medical
  • Cortechs.ai
  • Qure.ai

AI Central Pro further bridges the knowledge gap by providing AI imaging manufacturers the ability to add even more information about their products to the directory, including explanations of product use and value, and their contact information.

"AI Central represents the College’s enduring effort to enhance informed decision making in an ever-growing imaging AI marketplace through a regularly updated online resource," said Bibb Allen, MD, FACR, ACR DSI chief medical officer. "The updated directory simplifies access to comprehensive information on FDA-cleared AI imaging products, facilitating deeper insights and connections for potential buyers and users."

ACR DSI staff will be at RSNA 2023 (booth number 3129) to demonstrate the Transparent-AI program:

  • Sunday, Nov. 26, 2pm CT.
  • Monday, Nov. 27, 11am CT.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 28, 3pm CT.

The AI Central directory was created in 2018 and is the largest online searchable directory of commercially available imaging AI products in the United States.

“AICentral.org is the most complete and up-to-date interactive online directory of FDA-cleared imaging AI products in the United States,” said Christoph Wald, MD, PhD, MBA, FACR, chair of ACR Commission on Informatics. “The AICentral.org content and function expansion will help our members gain a better understanding of the available commercial offerings while increasing product transparency in the imaging AI marketplace.” For more information about Transparent-AI, AI Central or AI Central Pro, go to AICentral.org or contact the ACR DSI at dsi@acr.org.
