Purpose

Pericardial effusion is difficult to assess and may show inter-observer variability, depending on what location the effusion is measured.

Clinical Implementation

Value Proposition

Added value for patients with pericardial effusion, in particular, patients with inflammatory heart disease. Follow-up evaluation of effusion and greater accuracy compared to mere diameter measurements. Furthermore, it is yet not possible in clinical routine to provide the absolute volume of effusion.

Narrative(s)

First patient shows pericardial effusion, however, it is located more adjacent to the RV and not circumferential. The reader is uncertain on how the effusion should be quantified.
Second patient with previous pericarditis and coronary artery disease is scanned sequentially for follow-up. Diameter measurements are not sufficiently accurate to detect dynamics in volume, however, volumetric assessment reveals significant changes.

Workflow Description

The reader detects pericardial effusion, though the effusions seems to have a similar density to water, complicating the quantification. An algorithm is triggered, which analyzes the image and returns the volume of effusion. Algorithm also segments areas of the image consistent with effusion to determine the homogeneity of the effusion and provide some interpretability for the output.
