Clinical Implementation

Value Proposition

Acute cord compression is an emergency that can occur in settings including trauma, malignancy, infection, and coagulopathy and can lead to severe morbidity if left untreated. The ability to quickly diagnose cord compression by imaging can avert devastating symptoms such as paralysis, loss of sensation, loss of urinary control, and spinal shock. Imaging is essential in determining the location, severity, and cause of cord compression. AI that can effectively return this information will likely reduce turnaround time and improve quality of care.

Narrative(s)

65 year old with a history of prostate cancer presents to the emergency department with urinary retention and flaccid paraparesis. An MRI of the total spine is obtained. Algorithm evaluates image and returns cord compression. The radiologist is informed of this categorization at the time of interpretation.

Workflow Description

Patient receives a spine MRI. Images obtained from modality and sent to PACS and the AI engine. Image analyzed by engine. If the algorithm can determine a result, system returns the presence, degree, and location of cord compression and presence of compressive myelopathy. A message is sent to PACS from the engine with the classification information.
